Reverse Osmosis Water Purifiers

In a reverse osmosis water purifier, water is forced to pass through a semipermeable membrane which holds back particles and contaminants.

A typical reverse osmosis purifier is made up of the following parts:

Pre-filter (1st stage): Filtration in RO purifiers starts from here. This filter removes large particles from water and protects the other filters and the semipermeable membrane.

Pre-filter (2nd stage): The filter in this stage is made with carbon. They help in removing chlorine and other chemical contaminants by absorbing them, thereby improving the taste and smell.

RO Membrane: This is the main part of the RO purifier. It is a membrane made up of very fine material and very small pores to stop the smallest of particles and contaminants. This is usually the final stage of filtration.

Storage Tank: The purified water from the RO membrane is store in the storage tank. The RO system utilizes electricity; the storage tank will provide water in times of power outage.

Automatic Shut-off Valve: This stops water from entering the storage tank when it has filled up to prevent spillage.

Drain Line: Contaminated water rejected by the RO membrane goes through this line to the drain pipe or bucket where it can be used for other things like washing house chores involving water.

TDS Controller: During the filtration process in a reverse osmosis purifier, vitals minerals expected of a healthy drinking water are filtered out. A TDS (Total Dissolved Salts) controller helps to add these minerals and make the water taste better and healthier.

Note: All Ro purifiers don’t come with all these parts as listed above and in that manner. Some have more filters and some have less.

Disadvantages of RO Water Purifier

  • Requires high pressure to force the contaminated water through the semipermeable membrane.

  • Pre-filters (sediment/carbon filters): Every 6-12 months
  • RO Membrane: Every 2-3 years
  • Post filter (carbon filter): Every 12 months

Factors that may affect the performance of a Reverse Osmosis system include:

  • Water Pressure: if the water pressure is low, filtration by the RO membrane will be difficult, thus the need for electricity.
  • Water Temperature: The lower the temperature of the water, the slower the filtration process.
  • Type and number of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water
  • The quality of the pre-filters, filters and RO membranes used in the RO System
